Squad news and injury updates
There was no place for new signing Sandro Tonali, who was managing an undisclosed injury, while Andy Robertson was also held back, along with fellow new recruit Jan Paul van Hecke, with De Zerbi keen to incrementally build up the pair’s fitness after their respective World Cup campaigns. The duo could be involved here in some capacity, however, and Mateus Fernandes has featured both against Milton Keynes back at home and Auckland as he continues his build after a £85million move from West Ham.
Spurs' ambitions for the new season
Spurs are looking to improve on their 17th-place finish in the Premier League last term after a kamikaze season almost ended in a shock relegation to the Championship. De Zerbi took over the reins and steered them clear of the drop after Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor’s miserable tenures. He has been heavily backed in the transfer window, with the likes of Fernandes, Tonali, Van Hecke, Robertson and Marcos Senesi all signed to strengthen the squad.
