Stirling Albion kicked off their League Two campaign with a 2-0 victory over Dumbarton, and manager Steven Whittaker was quick to highlight the team's hard work as the key to their success.
First league win for Whittaker
The match was seen as an important early test for the Binos' promotion hopes, and they responded with a composed performance to take all three points against the Sons. Whittaker, celebrating his first league win as a manager, praised his players' effort on and off the ball.
"The overall performance showed we deserved the victory, although there were moments in the game that we can improve on and that we'll look at," he said. "The endeavour of the boys was massive and I've been at the players to have that attitude, to stick together and you can see that throughout today."
Injury challenges
The win came despite the absence of several key players due to injury, a situation that has tested the squad's depth early in the season. Whittaker acknowledged the setbacks but remained confident in his squad's ability to cope.
"We've not got our full squad after losing a few through injury, but hopefully we will get into a stronger position when they are back during the season," he added. "The squad we've built is one where we believe we are strong enough to handle these moments and we don't become any weaker; the boys were a credit to themselves and stood up to the challenge in front of them."
Defensive improvement
A key focus for the team has been tightening up a defence that has been vulnerable in recent seasons. The clean sheet on the opening day was a positive sign, and Whittaker was pleased with the collective effort to stay compact.
"Even with the goals we've conceded through the League Cup, we were probably unlucky not to have more clean sheets there and it fell right for us today with getting the penalty and being able to hit them in the transition moments which we did," he said. "The effort we showed to get behind the ball and be compact proved itself in the game and we did really well. They had moments against us, which they will as a good team, but we stuck together."
Allan's contribution
Whittaker also singled out Jordan Allan, who scored both goals, for his work rate at both ends of the pitch. He stressed that Allan's role goes beyond scoring, highlighting his hard work for the team.
"Jordan just wants to score goals and I've tried to put players in the forward areas who impact the game in front of goal, but just as important is the role he's doing for the team with his hard work, which everyone is buying into," he said.
