Newcastle United's teenage midfielder Sean Steur has been one of the standout performers in a turbulent pre-season, with supporters and staff impressed by his displays. The 18-year-old, signed from Ajax for £23 million, has shown crisp passing, composure in tight spaces, and a constant desire for possession, drawing comparisons to classic Dutch playmakers.
Impressive Pre-Season Form
Steur impressed in behind-closed-doors games and was United's best player against Gateshead. He followed that with a classy second-half substitute performance against Valencia at the Mestalla, stepping up against higher-quality opposition without looking fazed. His displays have led to talk of him starting the Premier League opener against Liverpool in just under two weeks.
However, a word of caution has come from former manager Eddie Howe, who left shortly after the Bristol City defeat. Howe said: "We feel he's an integral part of this season otherwise we wouldn't have signed him. Yes, he's got stuff to develop, physically will be the biggest challenge for him. The Premier League as we know is a different beast to any other league so there will be a period of adapting for him."
Challenges Ahead
Steur struggled in the 4-1 defeat at Bristol City, facing the pace and physicality of a Championship side, but he was far from alone in a below-par team performance. The game was instructive, making Wednesday's friendly against Everton a crucial test.
Against a hard-working, organized Everton side at Murrayfield, Steur will face a different challenge than against Valencia, who played with 10 men. If he comes through that audition, he could be in line to start against Liverpool, with other options like Aladji Bamba and Lewis Miley lacking match fitness this summer.
