Spurs off bottom after first win of season against Coventry
Spurs off bottom with first win of season against Coventry

Tottenham Hotspur earned their first Premier League win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City, lifting them off the bottom of the table. Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush, and substitute Ben Davies secured the points in a match that was far from convincing.

Maddison and Marmoush strike

Maddison, making his first start in 536 days, opened the scoring with a brilliant curling shot from 25 yards after a pass from Mohammed Kudus. The England international, who was booed by Coventry fans throughout, celebrated his first goal since scoring in a Europa League semi-final against Bodø/Glimt on 1 May 2025.

Coventry equalised through Jack Rudoni, who exchanged passes with Caleb Yirenkyi before shooting past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. However, Marmoush responded in the 59th minute with a vicious effort from 20 yards, despite appearing to catch Milan van Ewijk with an elbow in the build-up. The goal stood, with no intervention from video assistant referee Paul Tierney.

Davies seals the win

Ben Davies, on as a substitute, calmed nerves by drilling in the third goal from just outside the area in stoppage time. Dejan Kulusevski also made his first appearance after more than a season out, coming on as a substitute to a warm reception.

Spurs, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, had struggled without Kulusevski's creativity since his knee injury in May 2025. The win, described as messy but gritty, pushed Coventry into 17th place. De Zerbi had taken the squad to Marbella for warm weather training last week, and Spurs will hope for sunnier times ahead.
