Spain Retain Nations League Title with 3-0 Win

Spain's women's national football team have successfully defended their UEFA Women's Nations League crown, securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Germany in the second leg of the final in Madrid. The world champions achieved this feat on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, despite being without their injured star player and Ballon d'Or winner, Aitana Bonmati.

Pina Inspires Second-Half Surge

The final was finely poised after a goalless first leg in Kaiserslautern, where Germany had dominated but failed to convert numerous chances. The script flipped dramatically in the Spanish capital. After more than 150 minutes of deadlock across both ties, the breakthrough finally came in the 61st minute from the inspirational Claudia Pina.

Exploiting a momentary lapse in the German defence, Pina combined with Esther Gonzalez before firing a shot that German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger could only touch but not keep out. This moment of quality shattered the resistance and set Spain on course for victory.

Lopez and Pina Seal Historic Win

The floodgates opened after the first goal. Just seven minutes later, Vicky Lopez doubled Spain's lead, cutting in from the right flank and curling a superb effort past Berger from a similar position to Pina's opener.

Pina then saved her best for last, putting the result beyond any doubt in the 74th minute. Collecting the ball in midfield, she drove forward before unleashing an unstoppable strike that sealed a 3-0 win on the night and ensured Spain retained the title they first won against France in the tournament's inaugural edition in 2024.

A Triumph for Squad Depth and Ambition

Spain's coach, Sonia Bermudez, praised her team's resilience and the phenomenal support from the home crowd. Speaking to RTVE, Bermudez stated, "It's a very beautiful day to enjoy. There (in Germany), we were not the Spain we want to be. We knew we would have the support of the people here and they have been very important."

She highlighted the significance of the achievement, adding, "They have achieved it. They have mobilised 70,000 people to watch them play. It is a very ambitious group and today we had a difficult opponent, so it is a day to enjoy." The victory underscores the formidable depth and talent within the Spanish squad, proving they can triumph on the biggest stage even without their most celebrated player.
