Manchester United have been told that Gareth Southgate would require significant time and patience if he were to succeed Ruben Amorim as head coach, according to reports. The Red Devils are searching for their seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, after sacking Amorim on Monday following a 14-month tenure.
Southgate, a lifelong United supporter, has been out of work since resigning as England manager after leading the Three Lions to the Euro 2024 final, where they lost 2-1 to Spain. The 55-year-old has been linked with the Old Trafford role since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club in February 2024.
Insiders suggest the former England boss would require assurances that the board would commit to long-term objectives, as he is concerned they might expect immediate results. His managerial approach focuses on steady success over an extended period, and he would need a four-year commitment to turn things around — something the United hierarchy may not be prepared to offer.
Amorim was dismissed after a 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, which prompted the Portuguese to hint at a possible departure. Despite being appointed as head coach by INEOS in November 2024, Amorim insisted on being recognised as the manager. United confirmed his exit in a statement, thanking him for his contribution and noting that Darren Fletcher will take charge against Burnley on Wednesday.
Other candidates linked with the vacancy include Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner, Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler, and former Barcelona and Real Madrid managers Xavi Hernandez and Zinedine Zidane.
