Manchester United have reportedly held discussions with former England manager Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement for under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim. According to TalkSport, Southgate has spoken with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in recent weeks and is being considered as an option to take over at Old Trafford.
Amorim's position is under increasing scrutiny after United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday, leaving them 14th in the Premier League with just seven points from six matches. The Portuguese has won only 18 of his 49 games in charge, with his refusal to alter his formation drawing significant criticism.
While United's hierarchy are reluctant to sack Amorim, they may be forced to act if results do not improve. Compensation for the 40-year-old could amount to as much as £12 million. Southgate was among the contenders when Amorim was hired to replace Erik ten Hag, but he was unwilling to return to club management at the time.
United also admire Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, though both may be difficult to prise from their current clubs. Speaking after the Brentford defeat, Amorim expressed frustration, saying: 'We can do better with the ball... we need to have more personality to control the games.'
