Manchester United are poised for crucial discussions with club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this weekend, as they seek an interim manager to steer the team for the rest of the season.
Saturday Summit for Solskjaer
Face-to-face talks are scheduled for Saturday between Solskjaer and key Manchester United figures, including director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada. This meeting follows preliminary discussions and comes as the club urgently looks to fill the managerial vacancy on a temporary basis.
The need for an interim appointment arose after the club decided to terminate Ruben Amorim's tenure on Monday. Amorim's 14-month reign at Old Trafford was deemed underwhelming, prompting the search for a short-term solution.
Leading Candidates Emerge
While former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and current caretaker head coach Darren Fletcher have been considered, the race is now believed to be between two familiar faces. Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are understood to be the frontrunners for the interim position.
Carrick, who served as a first-team coach under Solskjaer and had a brief interim spell himself after Solskjaer's 2021 departure, has already met with the club's hierarchy earlier this week.
A Familiar Rescue Act?
Solskjaer's potential return evokes memories of his previous rescue mission at the club. In December 2018, he stepped in following the sacking of another Portuguese coach, Jose Mourinho. His successful initial stint led to him being handed the permanent role in March 2019.
During his permanent tenure, the 1999 treble hero guided United to a second-place finish in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season and to the Europa League final, before his dismissal in November 2021.
The new interim manager will face an immediate baptism of fire. United are scheduled to host Brighton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, before a massive Premier League clash against rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford next weekend.
