Manchester United are considering a sensational and emotional return for former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take temporary charge of the team until the end of the season.
Solskjaer Spotted Amid Managerial Speculation
The Norwegian, a beloved figure at Old Trafford, was photographed on Tuesday at a Waitrose supermarket in Wilmslow, Cheshire, close to a home he owns in the area. His presence has fuelled intense speculation about a potential comeback.
Solskjaer, 52, is now a prominent name on the list of possible interim candidates following the club's decision to part ways with manager Rubén Amorim on Monday. Internal sources at United have stressed that other candidates are also being considered and that no outright favourite has been established yet.
A History of Successful Interim Management
Solskjaer is no stranger to stepping into the breach at Manchester United. In December 2018, he was appointed as the temporary successor to José Mourinho. His successful stint in that role, which galvanised the team and fans, led to him being handed the job on a permanent basis.
He remained in charge for nearly three more years before his dismissal in November 2021. His legendary status at the club was cemented during his playing career, most notably for scoring the unforgettable last-minute winner in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, completing Sir Alex Ferguson's historic treble.
Sources close to Solskjaer remained tight-lipped on Tuesday about the possibility of a return. However, his deep understanding of the club and its culture is seen as a potentially galvanising force for the dressing room and the fanbase if United turns to him for a second time.
United's Short and Long-Term Planning
It is considered unlikely that any interim appointment, including Solskjaer, would stay beyond this season. The club plans to make a permanent managerial appointment in the summer. Sources have not completely ruled out making that permanent hire now if the right candidate is available, but that scenario is viewed as improbable.
The interim manager is expected to work alongside Darren Fletcher, the club's Under-18s selector who has assumed a provisional role following Amorim's departure after a turbulent 14-month reign.
Jonny Evans has also returned to United to work with Fletcher, having resigned from his loans manager position in December after just six months. The Northern Irishman could remain part of the new temporary structure.
Academy coaches Travis Binnion and Alan Wright will also assist Fletcher as he takes charge of his first match against Burnley on Wednesday night.
