Australia lost 1-0 to Mexico in their final World Cup warm-up match at the Rose Bowl in California, but the performance offered signs of confidence ahead of their tournament opener against Turkey. Despite the defeat, Tony Popovic's side produced a spirited second-half display, creating several chances to equalise in front of 78,479 fans.
The match highlighted the importance of defenders Harry Souttar and Jackson Irvine, who both appear likely to start in the World Cup after recovering from injury concerns. Souttar, who played the full 90 minutes, acknowledged the difficulty of squad selection, saying: 'There'll be a few disappointed boys going to miss out on it... It's a real shame, but that's football.'
Popovic made a surprise selection by starting 18-year-old Lucas Herrington on the left of a back three, ahead of more experienced Cam Burgess. The coach also deployed Connor Metcalfe and Mathew Leckie in attacking midfield roles, leaving Nestory Irankunda on the bench, signalling a cautious approach that characterised the first half.
Mexico dominated possession early on but struggled to create clear chances. The breakthrough came from a corner, when Johan Vásquez's glancing header squirmed through a crowd and crossed the line off the post. The goal was a disappointment for Australia, who pride themselves on set-piece solidity.
The Socceroos had the best chance of the first half when Mo Touré failed to convert a bouncing ball into an open goal after a Mexican defensive mix-up. Touré redeemed himself in the second half, playing a key role in Australia's improved performance, including a volley from a Souttar header that led to a fine save from Mexico's substitute goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
The defeat increases pressure on Popovic to finalise his World Cup squad, due to be announced on Monday. Cristian Volpato, who recently switched allegiance, was left out of the matchday squad alongside forwards Brandon Borrello and Tete Yengi and goalkeeper Joe Gauci, adding intrigue to the final selection decisions.
