Snooker Community Unites to Honour John Virgo at Sheffield Memorial

A poignant memorial service for the revered snooker legend John Virgo was held at Sheffield Cathedral today, drawing a host of snooker greats and devoted fans to celebrate his life and legacy. The event, organised by Ken Doherty and Rob Walker, provided an opportunity for the snooker community and Sheffield residents to pay their respects to Virgo, who passed away in February at the age of 79.

Legends and Fans Pay Tribute

The service commenced at 1pm, with guests including Virgo's widow Rosie Ries and his long-time friend Dennis Taylor arriving from around 12.30pm. Notable attendees featured seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry and John Parrott, among other snooker luminaries. Fans were welcomed to the cathedral, though limited to 600 spaces on a first-come, first-served basis, with one fan, Phil Hudson from Telford, expressing his admiration by wearing a tribute t-shirt.

"I just wanted to pay my respects to him really," Hudson said. "He was a great man, he'll be truly missed at this year's World Championships."

Reception and Celebrations

Following the service, a reception was held at Sheffield Town Hall from 2.30pm to 5pm, offering drinks and canapes in a relaxed setting. This gathering allowed attendees to share memories and honour Virgo's contributions both on the snooker table and in the commentary booth, where he was affectionately known as 'JV'.

The memorial highlighted Virgo's enduring impact on the sport, with Ken Doherty emphasising the importance of commemorating his life. The event served as a fitting farewell to a beloved figure in snooker history, blending solemn remembrance with celebratory moments among friends and fans alike.
