Sir Alex Ferguson made an emotional return to Old Trafford on Saturday, receiving a standing ovation from Manchester United fans as he took his seat in the directors' box for the Premier League match against Wolves. It was his first appearance at the stadium since suffering a brain haemorrhage in May.
The former United manager, who looked in good health, was visibly moved by the reception. Supporters rose before kick-off to applaud him, while chanting "Every single one of us loves Alex Ferguson." Ferguson responded by raising his hands above his head in acknowledgement.
He was accompanied by staff from Salford Royal Hospital, who had treated and cared for him during his recovery. Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ferguson admitted to feeling nervous about returning. "I'm a bit nervous, to be honest with you, maybe a bit tense really because the last game was Arsenal back in April. It was a long time but it's great to be back and I just hope we get a win today," he said.
Ferguson also spoke of the overwhelming support he had received since his illness, describing the thousands of cards that arrived at Salford Royal Hospital and at his home. "The number of emails, texts and personal cards to the house, it was just amazing. It really was," he added.
