Bernardo Silva Slams Refereeing After Man City's Title Blow Against Forest
Manchester City's Premier League title ambitions suffered a significant setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium, with captain Bernardo Silva launching a scathing critique of the officiating post-match.
Silva's Fury Over Penalty Decision
Bernardo Silva expressed intense frustration after referee Darren England and VAR officials declined to award a penalty when Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels appeared to bring down Erling Haaland with City leading 2-1 in the second half. "For me, it is a penalty. What can Erling do? This season, we are used to it, we know how it works. All the 50-50s have gone against us," Silva fumed, suggesting a pattern of unfavourable decisions.
The incident proved pivotal, as just three minutes later, Elliot Anderson equalised for Forest, dealing City's championship aspirations a severe blow. The result allowed Arsenal to extend their lead at the Premier League summit to seven points following their 1-0 victory over Brighton.
Guardiola's Measured Response and Silva's Agreement
City manager Pep Guardiola opted for a more restrained approach, declining to discuss specific penalty claims. "I spoke weeks ago about that subject. I always believe that we have to do it much better so the officials don't intervene. It's our responsibility to do it better so we don't have to rely on them. Nothing more to say, I said it in the past," Guardiola stated, emphasising internal improvement over external criticism.
Silva concurred with his manager's perspective, adding: "Our job is to be better. These things we cannot control. What we can control is our own performances." He acknowledged the team's frustration at failing to secure victory despite creating numerous chances, noting: "It is quite frustrating because we were playing at home and twice we were leading and we couldn't keep the result. At the end we had a lot of chances, they went up twice and scored two goals. Sometimes football is like this."
Match Details and Forest's Resilience
The match saw Antoine Semenyo open the scoring for City, only for Morgan Gibbs-White to equalise for Forest. Rodri then restored City's advantage, but Elliot Anderson's late strike secured a precious point for the visitors in their battle against relegation.
Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira praised his team's character and resilience. "It was a tough game but there was a lot of personality from my team. After five games in 15 days, it is not easy to perform at this level, but there were good moments of football, good team spirit and I'm happy with my players," Pereira said. He emphasised the importance of the result: "It was important to come here and prove we can get points everywhere. It doesn't matter if it is City or another club - it is about us believing in ourselves and proving we can play good football."
The draw leaves Manchester City facing an uphill struggle in the title race, with Silva's comments highlighting growing tensions over refereeing standards as the season reaches its critical phase.
