Michael Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes for last weekend's defeat, and the image of the Portugal star glued to the Manchester United bench said a lot. It was a power play from Carrick, who must have thought he had led his former side for the last time.
In the six days since, he has been backed by those above him, but with the caveat that things need to improve and fast if he is to remain long-term. Carrick and Fernandes have also held talks to clear the air.
Fernandes' Reaction and Form
The Portugal star was scathing about Carrick in the aftermath of the loss at Como, and clearly the United boss felt he needed to make a statement, even if that meant leaving out his best player.
Whilst Fernandes may be United's best player, he has hardly been playing at his optimum this season. Carrick will also know that, with his job on the line, he may need his players to dig deep and commit to him.
Selection Questions Loom
It is also worth noting that Fernandes was, supposedly, dropped for football reasons. The question remains whether those reasons have really changed in the space of a week.
Even after discussing any differences with Fernandes, questions have to be asked over whether the Portuguese playmaker will truly buy in for his manager, who needs a win more than ever.
