Sheffield Wednesday's Championship match against Coventry City was temporarily halted on Saturday after a group of supporters invaded the pitch in protest against club owner Dejphon Chansiri. The incident occurred in the 10th minute at Hillsborough, with stewards quickly intervening to clear the pitch and the game resuming after a five-minute delay.
The protest reflects growing discontent among fans over the club's financial struggles. Players were reportedly not paid in September, marking the fifth month out of the last seven that wages have been delayed. The club faces multiple embargoes from the English Football League (EFL) due to late payments to HMRC, unpaid transfer fees, and failure to pay players and staff on time.
The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust has called for Chansiri to “step aside,” and a majority of fans are boycotting home games. The club's official X account acknowledged the pitch invasion, stating that the referee had paused the match after supporters entered the field of play.
On the pitch, Coventry City took full advantage of the disruption, with Brandon Thomas-Asante scoring twice in the first half to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Goals from Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto in the second half sealed a 5-0 victory, sending Coventry to the top of the Championship table.
