Shearer Slams Premier League Over Single Boxing Day Fixture

Alan Shearer has criticised the Premier League for scheduling only one match on Boxing Day, calling the decision “mad” and out of step with British sporting tradition. The former Newcastle and Blackburn striker, who will watch Newcastle face Manchester United as a fan rather than a pundit, expressed his dismay at the sparse festive fixture list.

“I can’t remember the last Boxing Day I had off,” Shearer said. “Even after I finished playing, I volunteered for Match of the Day. But this year, I’m not working on Boxing Day—I’m on the 27th. It seems mad that there’s only one game on Boxing Day. That feels really strange.”

Shearer highlighted the cultural significance of Boxing Day football in Britain, contrasting it with the winter breaks taken in other European leagues. “The big thing in this country is sport on Boxing Day. There are usually so many matches. I think I’d be lost without it,” he added.

The Premier League legend also recalled his own experiences playing over the festive period, noting that he “loved how hectic and busy it was.” He described scoring two goals for Blackburn against Leeds on Boxing Day 1992 before rupturing his cruciate ligament, but said he “felt good” during that time of year.

Shearer’s comments come as the Premier League faces scrutiny for reducing the traditional Boxing Day programme, with only Newcastle vs Manchester United taking place on December 26 this year.
