The BBC is facing a deepening crisis after its decision to suspend Gary Lineker from presenting Match of the Day prompted a wave of boycotts from pundits and presenters. Alan Shearer and Ian Wright were among the first to announce they would not appear on Saturday's show, with others following suit.
Lineker was told to step back from his role after comparing the language used in the government's new Migration Bill to that of Germany in the 1930s. The BBC said his social media activity breached its guidelines, but Lineker has insisted the decision was not mutual.
Ian Wright tweeted: “Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I’ve told the BBC I won’t be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity.” Alan Shearer also confirmed his absence, stating: “I have informed the BBC that I won’t be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night.”
Other pundits, including Alex Scott, Micah Richards, Jermaine Jenas, and Dion Dublin, have also ruled themselves out. Scott, who hosts Football Focus, confirmed she would step back from that role as well. The BBC has now decided that Saturday's programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry.
The Professional Footballers' Association has said it will support players who do not wish to fulfil media duties in solidarity with Lineker. The situation continues to escalate, with commentators reportedly considering joining the boycott.
