Shapovalov Retires From Wimbledon After Wall Crash

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov was forced to retire from his first-round Wimbledon match against Pablo Carreno Busta after crashing into a wall at high speed on Court 6, suffering a severe shoulder injury. The chair umpire and Carreno Busta immediately rushed to check on the 27-year-old as he writhed in pain.

Crash and Immediate Aftermath

The incident occurred when a heavy forehand from Carreno Busta dragged Shapovalov wide, causing him to collide violently with the surrounding wall. Despite safety padding, the impact was forceful enough to seriously injure his shoulder. Shapovalov attempted to continue but eventually conceded after losing a second-set tiebreak 9-7, deciding that playing on could aggravate the injury further. This granted Carreno Busta his first-ever win at Wimbledon.

Medical Treatment and Retirement

Medical staff treated Shapovalov immediately after the crash and again after the second set. He had bravely fought to a tiebreak but narrowly lost it before officially withdrawing from the tournament. While speaking to his opponent at the net, he appeared to say: "Sorry man, I think I f***ed it."

Recent Struggles and Past Success

This setback adds to a miserable run of form for Shapovalov, who has recorded only one win since mid-April. His recent losses include a first-round defeat to Jaime Faria at Roland Garros, as well as early exits at the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and the Libema Open. In contrast, back in 2021, the Canadian enjoyed a brilliant run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, knocking out Andy Murray before falling to Novak Djokovic in the last four. Reflecting on that match, Shapovalov told the ATP: "I kind of got an early break on him in that semi-final... I honestly felt like I was outplaying him the majority of the first set and maybe a little bit too confident in that moment." He added: "It's definitely one of those experience losses."
