The Football Association of Serbia has become the latest national association to withdraw its backing for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, joining England and Wales in calling for a change of leadership before the 2027 election.
The move follows Infantino's controversial plan to sell a stake in FIFA tournaments, which he later withdrew after fierce opposition from several world football governing bodies. UEFA led the resistance, threatening to boycott all FIFA events, including the World Cup, while CONCACAF also criticised FIFA's leadership.
Third association withdraws support
The English Football Association (FA) and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) had already withdrawn their support for Infantino as he seeks re-election for the 2027-2031 term. Serbia has now followed them.
In a statement released on Monday, the Football Association of Serbia said: "We recall that FA of Serbia formally expressed its support for Mr Infantino in writing on 25 May this year, but after a thorough consideration of the developments that have seriously undermined the reputation and credibility of both FIFA and its President in the past period, this is the only logical and rational move."
The association added that the future of world football must be founded on transparency, dialogue, mutual respect and partner relations, and that no decision of strategic importance should be made without broad consensus and open consultation with all relevant stakeholders. It said it remained committed to cooperation with FIFA, UEFA and all national associations, but that new trust, a new approach and management that would contribute to restoring dialogue, unity and the credibility of international football institutions were needed.
