Sam Kerr is set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season, concluding a six-year spell that brought remarkable success to the west London club. The Australian striker has been a pivotal figure in Chelsea's dominance, winning five Women's Super League titles, three FA Cups, and three League Cups. She also claimed two WSL Golden Boots and scored crucial goals, including in three FA Cup finals at Wembley and a title-deciding match on the final day of the season.
A Legacy of Goals and Trophies
With 115 goals in 177 appearances, Kerr is Chelsea's second-highest all-time scorer, just one goal behind Fran Kirby. She has the opportunity to equal or surpass that record in her final appearance against Manchester United on Saturday. Reflecting on her time at the club, the 32-year-old said: "When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy. Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could."
Challenges and Departure
Kerr's tenure included significant challenges. She suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2024, sidelining her for 20 months after finishing second in the Ballon d'Or. Additionally, she faced a high-profile trial for racially aggravated harassment against a police officer, of which she was found not guilty after 13 months. Kerr's departure follows the retirement of Chelsea captain Millie Bright. The club expressed gratitude, stating: "We thank Sam for her incredible contribution to our success on the pitch and sustained growth off it. We wish her all the best in the next chapter of her career."
