Salah's Trabzonspor Move: Fan Says New Home 'Just Like Liverpool'

Mohamed Salah's move to Trabzonspor has been met with shock and excitement, with fans drawing parallels to his time at Liverpool. The Egyptian forward completed his transfer this week after an early end to his Liverpool career.

Fan Reaction to the Signing

Ömer, from fan site Bordo Mavi Usaklar, told the ECHO: "When I first heard that Salah was going to join Trabzonspor, I was both incredibly surprised and extremely excited. To be honest, I found it hard to believe."

He added: "I followed the news very closely for around two days before the transfer was officially confirmed. When Trabzonspor finally made the official announcement, I was absolutely delighted. Even now, I still can’t quite believe this transfer has happened."

Similarities Between Trabzon and Liverpool

Ömer, who grew up in Trabzon, highlighted the cultural parallels: "Both are based in port cities away from the nation’s capital. Another important similarity is that clubs like Trabzonspor and Liverpool have strong roots within their working-class communities."

He noted the passionate fan bases: "Trabzonspor supporters, just like Liverpool supporters, are incredibly loyal to their club. They always support their team and never leave them alone. Salah has already experienced being part of such a strong fan culture at Liverpool, so I believe he will feel a similar sense of belonging and support at Trabzonspor."

Underdog Identity

Trabzonspor, who finished third in the Turkish Super Lig and will compete in the Europa League, are seen as challengers to Istanbul's "Big Three" of Besiktas, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray. Ömer said: "I would describe Trabzonspor’s identity as a symbol of the idea that the underdog can stand up to the powerful and achieve great things."

He added: "Trabzonspor has never been a club that simply accepts the dominance of the powerful Istanbul teams. Instead, it challenged that dominance and broke the monopoly of the Istanbul clubs by becoming the first team from outside Istanbul to win the Turkish championship."

Geographical and Cultural Connections

Trabzon's port location and harsh environment have shaped the club's character. Ömer explained: "In the 1950s, football matches were reportedly played in Trabzon with people who arrived on British ships. This shows how old and important football culture has been in the city."

The rebellious spirit is a defining trait: "That rebellious spirit comes from the club’s challenge to the football dominance of the powerful Istanbul teams. Trabzonspor was the first club from outside Istanbul to challenge that established order and bring the Turkish championship outside Istanbul."

Salah's Gesture and Future

Salah has already endeared himself to fans by wearing a shirt with the number 61, Trabzon's licence plate number, upon arrival. Ömer said: "61 is Trabzon’s licence plate number and is a very important symbol for the city. For us, 61 is much more than just a number; it represents the city of Trabzon and the identity of Trabzonspor."

Looking ahead, Ömer expressed excitement: "It will be an incredible experience to see Salah walk onto the pitch wearing a Trabzonspor shirt. Watching a global superstar play for Trabzonspor will be a truly special moment. I honestly can’t put into words how excited I am."
