Little Switzerland town near Liverpool perfect for autumn break

Matlock Bath, a Derbyshire town nicknamed "Little Switzerland", is ideal for an autumn weekend escape and lies just two hours from Liverpool. The Romantic poet Lord Byron originally gave it the name because of its magnificent peaks and scenic landscape.

Why Matlock Bath is called Little Switzerland

The town sits in the Derwent Valley, surrounded by verdant forested trails and a bustling high street lined with independent retailers. Visitors can enjoy shopping or explore the natural scenery that inspired Byron's comparison to the Alpine nation.

Heights of Abraham and cable car rides

A key attraction is the Heights of Abraham, a 60-acre hilltop park perched above the town. It is reached by cable car, offering panoramic views across the village from several hundred feet up. The park also features subterranean caverns carved into the hillside, which visitors can explore with a guide while learning about the region's lead mining heritage.

For those who prefer to stay above ground, there are numerous walking routes and a cafe with views across the valley.

Things to do in Matlock Bath itself

On a rainy day, the Matlock Bath Aquarium is a notable stop. Inside, visitors can see enormous koi carp, one of the largest hologram displays in Europe, and the town's only surviving "petrifying well". This well appears to turn objects to stone as mineral-laden water cascades over them, coating anything placed inside with calcium carbonate and lime salts.

In sunny weather, a stroll along North Parade beside the River Derwent offers a seaside feel. Visitors can buy fish and chips or ice cream and watch rowing boats drift past on the water.
