Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs was arrested in a 'blood-stained shirt' after telling police he 'hit' his girlfriend 'in the lip' during a row at his £1.7million mansion, a court heard today. Jurors in the 48-year-old's assault and coercion trial were shown body-worn footage of Giggs inside his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, following the alleged incident in November 2020.
The court heard that Giggs and his ex-girlfriend, PR executive Kate Greville, had argued at dinner after she accused him of 'a couple of things' before returning alone to the property, where they rowed over their five-month-old golden retriever. Ms Greville previously told the court she had found evidence on an iPad that Giggs had engaged in 'full-on' relationships with eight other women during their six-year relationship.
Jurors also heard two dramatic 999 calls made by Ms Greville's sister Emma, who also accused Giggs of assaulting her during the same incident. In the calls, Emma is heard saying: 'Please can you come quickly? He's just headbutted her in the face.' The call handler asks who the alleged offender is, prompting Emma to say: 'Ryan Giggs. The footballer Ryan Giggs.'
Bodycam footage shows an officer entering the property and asking Giggs: 'What's been going on?' Giggs, wearing a white shirt with a blood mark, said he and Ms Greville had been out for a meal and 'a few drinks in town' while her sister looked after their dog. He told the officer that, following an argument, he had asked his ex-partner to leave and they had 'got into a little bit of a tangle'.
The officer said Giggs, who admitted drinking that night, 'had blood around his mouth' when he arrived. Ms Greville was found sitting on the kitchen floor 'visibly upset'. In the footage, Giggs tells the officer: 'I hit her in the lip', before accusing Ms Greville of kicking him in the head and busting his lip. Later footage shows a calm-looking Giggs being cautioned and walked to a police van without being handcuffed.
