Ryan Astley backs Duncan Ferguson for Scotland manager job

Ryan Astley has insisted Duncan Ferguson would be a great pick to become the next Scotland manager.

Astley worked with Ferguson at Everton and described him as the best coach he has worked with. Ferguson said during the World Cup that he would be willing to speak to the Scottish Football Association about succeeding Steve Clarke.

Great coach

"100%. I think he's such a good coach," Astley said. "He's been around the game for how long now? He's so experienced in football, he knows a lot of people. I don't see why not, being involved in that."

The former Scotland cap has managed at Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Astley believes Ferguson has all the tools.

"He's the best. He's the best, honestly. He's such a good guy, he gives everything. When I was there for the club, he was just the best," the Dundee defender said.

Hands-on approach

"In training with young lads, he was amazing. Constantly pushing you, driving every session. But just one of the best guys off the field as well, around the place. Just full of energy, positive energy, and he just lived for that club. He was really good," Astley added.

"Yes, you'd struggle not to learn, honestly. It's just valuable just listening to them, seeing how they coached players, and what they wanted and stuff. All of them see the game differently. It was really good and interesting, and I loved training with them."

Ferguson also gained experience working under top Everton managers including Carlo Ancelotti, David Moyes, Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman, Marco Silva and Rafa Benitez. Benitez has also been linked with the Scotland job.

Astley revealed Ferguson was hands-on. "All the managers let him do a lot of work, because he was really good," he added. "He wasn't just there because of his background at the club. He was a good coach, a really good coach. All the lads loved him, so it was really good."
