George Russell secured pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix in a dramatic qualifying session, edging out his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli by just six-hundredths of a second at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The result maintains Mercedes' perfect record of five poles from five races this season.
The qualifying triumph followed a feisty sprint race earlier on Saturday, where Russell and Antonelli clashed on track. Antonelli, attempting to pass Russell for the lead, felt forced wide and off track, leading to a furious radio exchange. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff intervened to calm the situation, with the incident costing the team a potential one-two finish.
Despite the tension, both drivers downplayed the clash after qualifying. Russell described the racing as hard but fair, noting that no contact occurred. Antonelli confirmed discussions were resolved, stating, "It's all good now." The pair will start alongside each other on the front row for Sunday's race.
Russell's pole lap was a last-gasp effort, as he crossed the line with a 1 minute 12.578-second lap after Antonelli had provisionally taken top spot. The Briton admitted the session was challenging but expressed delight at the result. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualified third and fourth for McLaren, while Lewis Hamilton took fifth for Ferrari under investigation for impeding Pierre Gasly.
