Roy Keane Accused of Bullying and Hypocrisy by Former Manchester United Masseuse

Roy Keane, the legendary former Manchester United captain, has been labelled a "bully" and a "hypocrite" by Rod Thornley, a former masseuse who worked at the club for 19 years. The accusation comes in response to Keane's recent comments criticising backroom staff at Old Trafford.

Keane's Controversial Comments Spark Backlash

Keane first aired his grievances during an episode of the football podcast The Overlap in June 2024. The Irishman expressed frustration with masseuses and physios at Manchester United, accusing them of behaving like "scavengers in the dressing room."

He claimed that these staff members would "get a bit cocky" and try to "run the show," citing examples such as wearing headphones like players, attempting to buy players' cars at discounted prices, and accumulating players' boots and trainers. Keane also criticised their presence at team celebrations and nights out.

Thornley's Explosive Response

Rod Thornley, who left Manchester United in 2019 after nearly two decades of service under Sir Alex Ferguson, has now hit back forcefully. In an interview with The Busby Way podcast, Thornley revealed that he believes Keane's rant was a personal attack directed at him following a past falling-out.

"I witnessed him (Keane) bully people many a time," Thornley stated. He specifically addressed Keane's claim about staff buying players' cars, pointing out the hypocrisy: "He sold his car to the caretaker at Man United. So like, I can't buy one off a player, but you can sell it to a member of staff."

Thornley described the online abuse he received after Keane's comments as "f***ing horrible" and said it significantly affected his mental health. "It just was bulls***, just aimed trying to hurt me," he blasted. "It's typical him – bullying someone. That's what Roy Keane's about a lot of the times."

Hypocrisy Allegations Over Family Involvement

Adding to the controversy, Thornley also accused Keane of hypocrisy for allowing his daughter Caragh to appear on The Overlap to promote her breakfast cereal brand. This, Thornley suggested, contradicts Keane's stance on non-playing staff seeking attention or benefits.

Keane, known for his old-school values and uncompromising leadership during his playing days, has always been vocal about maintaining high standards. However, Thornley's allegations paint a different picture, challenging the former captain's moral authority.

The Broader Context of Dressing Room Dynamics

This incident highlights the often-tense relationships between players and support staff in professional football. While Keane's comments reflect a desire to protect team culture, Thornley's response underscores the potential for such criticisms to cross into personal territory and cause real harm.

The exchange has sparked debate among fans and pundits about the boundaries of criticism in sport and the lasting impact of public disputes. As both men stand by their versions of events, the story continues to unfold, revealing deeper rifts within the football community.
