Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off as Troy Parrott scored twice to give the Republic of Ireland a sensational 2-0 victory over Portugal in their World Cup 2026 qualifier at the Aviva Stadium. The result keeps Ireland's hopes of reaching the finals alive, setting up a decisive clash with Hungary on Sunday.
Parrott opened the scoring in the 17th minute, turning home from close range after Liam Scales headed Josh Cullen's set-piece back across goal. The AZ Alkmaar striker doubled the lead just before half-time, running on to Dara O'Shea's ball over the top, cutting inside and beating Diogo Costa at his near post.
Portugal dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Irish defence. Their hopes suffered a major blow when Ronaldo was dismissed for elbowing O'Shea off the ball. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially showed a yellow card but upgraded it to red after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Portugal continued to press but could not find a way past Caoimhin Kelleher in the Ireland goal. The win moves Ireland level on points with Hungary in Group F, with a playoff spot at stake in their final match in Budapest.
Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson praised his side's character, while Ronaldo's petulance drew criticism. The 40-year-old had promised to be a 'good boy' before the match but left the field in disgrace after his 59th-minute red card.
