Andy Roddick has suggested that Serena Williams’s rumoured comeback could extend beyond a reported doubles appearance at Queen’s this month. The 44-year-old American, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, is said to have requested a wildcard to play doubles with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament, which begins on 8 June.
Speaking on his podcast, Roddick said he believes Williams will play singles at Wimbledon, not just doubles. “I think we’re going to see her play singles,” he stated, adding that her best chance of “lightning in a bottle” would be on grass at Wimbledon, where she is a seven-time singles champion.
Williams re-entered the tour’s drug-testing pool last August, fuelling speculation about a potential return. Roddick noted that entering doping protocols suggests a player is “looking to come back, or at least looking at the option.” He also raised the possibility of Williams playing doubles with her sister Venus, who has not yet retired, for one last run at the US Open.
Roddick expressed confidence that Williams will return to professional tennis, saying, “At this point, I’d be more surprised if she didn’t come back just to put a bow on it. I want Serena back on the tennis court. That would be unbelievable. I hope it happens!”
