Rio Ferdinand Issues Stern Warning to Manchester United's Leny Yoro
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has delivered a pointed critique of young defender Leny Yoro, advising the Frenchman to be more selective in his on-pitch confrontations. Ferdinand, who made over 450 appearances for the club, believes the 20-year-old is currently "picking too many fights" against physically superior opponents.
The Physical Disparity in Premier League Battles
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents show, the former England international highlighted the significant physical gap Yoro faces when competing against seasoned Premier League forwards. "Leny Yoro right now is trying to fight too many fights in a game when physically he's not starting at the same place," Ferdinand stated emphatically. "They're all much more physically developed. Most of the players he's playing against, and number nines especially, are stronger than him."
Ferdinand stressed the importance of tactical intelligence over brute force, suggesting Yoro must learn to "pick your battles" and "pick your duel." He elaborated with a strategic analogy: "If you've got a 60-40 in your favour, then you go all in. When you're in a 50-50 or 40-60 (in the attacker's favour), if you're not physically dominant - like Leny Yoro right now - you pick your punches."
Yoro's Recent Resurgence Under Carrick
Yoro's situation at Old Trafford has seen notable changes recently. The defender, who joined from LOSC Lille in July 2024 for approximately £52 million, initially struggled to secure a consistent starting position under managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. However, since Michael Carrick's appointment as interim boss, Yoro has featured in five of the last eight matches, with four appearances coming in the most recent fixtures.
This increased responsibility has come partly due to the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who has been recovering from a calf injury sustained in late February. Carrick has expressed optimism about Martinez's return in the coming weeks but has been generous in his praise for Yoro's deputising efforts.
Coaching Support and Historical Context
Ferdinand expressed confidence that Yoro is receiving the necessary guidance from United's coaching staff, particularly mentioning defenders Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate who serve on Carrick's backroom team. "These are just coaching points," Ferdinand noted, suggesting these experienced figures would be working diligently to help the young defender develop his game.
Interestingly, Yoro has previously spoken about his positive relationship with Ferdinand behind the scenes. In May of last year, the French defender revealed: "I speak a lot with the coach and I've spoken to Rio and not always in front of the cameras. Sometimes they just give me advice. When a player like Rio can give you advice you need to take it."
Yoro also addressed comparisons to United defensive greats like Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and Raphael Varane, stating: "I come to Man United to achieve big things, to win trophies... When they compare me to them it's a real honour, I'm proud of this. I'm trying to be the best I can."
Carrick's Public Support for the Young Defender
Despite Ferdinand's constructive criticism, interim manager Michael Carrick has publicly commended Yoro's recent performances. Following United's 1-1 draw away to West Ham last month, Carrick specifically highlighted the defender's contributions: "Credit to Leny. His two bits of defending one-vs-one and defending the counter attack, which he knew he was going to have to do at times... he deserves a lot of credit for that."
This endorsement from the interim boss suggests that while Yoro may need to refine his approach to physical battles, his overall defensive contributions have not gone unnoticed within the club's leadership. The coming weeks will reveal how Yoro incorporates Ferdinand's advice while maintaining his place in the starting lineup during a crucial period for Manchester United.
