Marcus Rashford has reportedly been handed the No. 14 shirt at Manchester United, a number he wore during his loan spell at Barcelona and one that holds deep personal significance.
Why No. 14?
Rashford had worn the No. 10 at United since 2018, but that shirt now belongs to Mateus Cunha, who joined from Wolves last summer. The No. 14 is famously associated with Barcelona legends Johan Cruyff and Thierry Henry.
Upon joining Barcelona, Rashford acknowledged the weight of the number: "I know the history behind this number. I feel a huge responsibility. I'm honoured to wear it, as Cruyff and Henry did."
Rashford has long admired Henry, having told Sky Sports in 2016: "Thierry Henry is one of my heroes, he is one of the players I watched when I was younger. When I was 17 I changed position to be a forward and he, along with the Brazilian Ronaldo, were the two players I tried to mirror my performance on. I would watch how they scored goals. He was definitely one of the major players."
Future at Old Trafford
Despite fluctuating shirt numbers, Rashford appears likely to stay at United for the coming season. His future was uncertain under former boss Ruben Amorim, leading to a loan at Aston Villa in the second half of 2024/25 and then a season-long deal at Barcelona in summer 2025.
Barcelona had a £26 million option to make the move permanent, but they appear to have spent their budget elsewhere, including £69 million on Anthony Gordon. Rashford managed 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 games last season.
With Amorim sacked in January and Michael Carrick appointed permanently this summer, Rashford could have a fresh start. He is currently travelling with the first team on their pre-season tour and may feature against AC Milan on August 15.
