Manchester United have assigned Marcus Rashford the number 14 shirt, a clear indication that the forward is set to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old, who spent the previous campaign on loan at Barcelona, has seen his future at the club become clearer under new management.
Rashford's loan spells and Barcelona's transfer moves
Rashford's relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim soured, leading to a loan move to Aston Villa in the second half of the 2024/25 season. He then joined Barcelona on a season-long deal last term. Barcelona had an option to make the move permanent for £26 million, but that now appears unlikely.
The Catalan club has already spent £69 million on Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon, who plays in a similar position, and is also pursuing Manchester City midfielder Rodri, potentially costing around £60 million. With limited funds, Barcelona seems less inclined to trigger Rashford's purchase option.
United's stance and squad number
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are open to keeping Rashford and allowing him to rebuild his connection with the club under Michael Carrick's leadership. The club has handed him the number 14 shirt as a gesture of confidence—the same number he wore at Barcelona under Hansi Flick, where he enjoyed considerable success.
Unless another European club steps forward with an offer, Rashford is expected to feature for United in the coming season.
