Marcus Rashford is at a crossroads in his Manchester United career, with the boyhood fan and local lad from Wythenshawe reportedly considering an exit from the club this summer. The 24-year-old forward has consulted Sir Alex Ferguson as he weighs up his options, according to sources close to the player.
Rashford's form has dipped sharply this season, with just four Premier League goals in 18 appearances – a return that has seen him dropped by interim manager Ralf Rangnick. The player who once revelled in rising to big occasions, such as scoring a last-minute penalty against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2019 Champions League, now harbours doubts about his place in the team.
The decline reflects a wider malaise at Old Trafford, where the Glazer family's ownership has saddled the club with £494.8m of debt and presided over nine years without a league title. Four permanent managers have been sacked since Ferguson retired, and Rangnick is the fourth temporary boss.
Rashford's potential departure would be a major blow to United's commercial operations, as he is a sponsor's dream and the club's ultimate poster boy. His off-field campaigning against child poverty has also made him a national figure, forcing the government into policy U-turns.
While his own form is a factor – he has only scored four league goals this season and none in the last two years – there is a deeper frustration at the club's endless cycle of mediocrity. Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring his situation as a possible replacement for Kylian Mbappé, should the Frenchman leave for Real Madrid.
