Rangers fans have turned on Derek McInnes after Thursday night's Europa League exit to Jagiellonia Bialystok, with some questioning whether he is the right man for the job.
Fan fury after European nightmare
James Thomson, Glasgow, raged: “I've had enough of this Rangers after 14 years of hell. That was a disgusting performance against the Poles and there are now very real questions about McInnes. What a shocking performance by this Rangers team. It’s the same garbage we’ve been watching for years. The defence is laughable and it’s clear this team will not win anything this season. The players must be told to their faces that this is not good enough. Yet again, it’s the Rangers supporters who have been let down.”
Peter Cooperwhite said: “Oh dear Derek, what are you saying? One minute you need players then you say in last night' interview it's mentality we need. Make your mind up because I have watched the last three games and it’s clear already you don't know how to put a winning formation out with these players. If I’m being honest, it’s not going to get any better.”
Mixed reactions from supporters
Joe Graham, Garrowhill, isn’t giving up hope: “What a horrible start for our new manager Derek McInnes. Four competitive games and still no wins. It makes you wonder whether he is the right man. His starting line ups have been disputable with most fans. We made a better start against the Poles but in the second half, the team didn’t want to go forward and have paid the penalty. Jagiellonia, on the other hand, were the opposite and that is why they are progressing to the Europa league. I faithfully hope Derek will get it right in the long run.”
Philip Borland isn’t so sure: “When is McInnes going to realise he is in over his head at Rangers and do the right thing and walk away? And he can take that dud Lawrence Shankland with him and all the rest of the garbage that has been to Ibrox this summer. The only one I can see turning into a good player is Daisuke Yokota, the rest are rotten.”
Financial and wider implications
Celtic Fan Sean Dolan, Chicago, said: “What a devastating week for Rangers. There’s a £10million drop in revenue due to Europa elimination and the insurance policy of selling Youssef Chermiti is also now gone, leaving only Nico Raskin as the only way to establish compliance with UEFA’s financial regulations. The business of selling him will need to be conducted by deadline day. The result leaves the Rangers with only loan options for incoming players. It’s like they can’t get out their own way. Season after season, they continue to run their business in an unsustainable way. They’ll be lucky to finish in the top four this season.”
Steve McSherry, Uddingston, praised Scotland’s other Euro representatives: “Motherwell and Hibs have done well for Scottish football with two good results in Europe. I’m sure Celtic will join them by beating LASK. As for Rangers, well, it was no surprise that they lost their tie as they are simply a rotten side.”
Over the green half of Glasgow, David Beattie, Rothesay, said: “I have been one of the biggest critics of Celtic hierarchy and their transfer policies the last few years. All I asked, like Brendan Rogers and ALL Celtic supporters, was for our team to be improved with real quality signings. They’ve finally got their act together and much as it is too late for Brendan Rogers, I think an apology is due from Dermot Desmond for his character assassination of Brendan. This is your chance to build bridges with the fans but more importantly highlight the fantastic work and success under Brendan, which merited a thank you not a venomous attack. Do the right thing DD.”
