Brock Purdy threw a career-high five touchdown passes as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Indianapolis Colts 48-27 on Monday night. Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 295 yards and one interception. Christian McCaffrey ran for 117 yards on 21 carries and caught six passes for 29 yards and two touchdowns.
Dee Winters returned an interception of Philip Rivers' final pass 74 yards for a score. George Kittle had seven receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown despite playing through an ankle injury. The 49ers (11-4) won their fifth straight game, keeping them in contention for the NFC's top seed.
Rivers, 44, playing in his second game back after a five-year layoff, was 23 of 35 for 277 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Colts (8-7) have lost five consecutive games and six of their last seven, diminishing their playoff hopes.
The Colts took an early lead on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Rivers to Alec Pierce, but Purdy responded with a 22-yard scoring pass to Demarcus Robinson. San Francisco pulled ahead 14-7 after a Colts fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to a two-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey. Rivers tied the score early in the second quarter with a 16-yard throw to Pierce, but Purdy broke the tie with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kittle.
Purdy extended the lead in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings. Jonathan Taylor's one-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 34-27, but Purdy's nine-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey and Winters' interception return sealed the victory.
