Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has expressed confidence that manager Luis Enrique will remain at the club, despite the emergence of a vacancy at Liverpool. The Reds parted ways with Arne Slot on Saturday after two years in charge, following a fifth-place Premier League finish that secured Champions League football.
Enrique, who led PSG to a Champions League final victory over Arsenal on Saturday evening, has been linked with the Liverpool job. Al-Khelaifi, speaking after the 4-3 penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw, praised the Spaniard highly. "He's very, very special, as a coach, human being, as a person, he is fantastic," Al-Khelaifi told TNT Sports. "He's the best coach in the world. He has done amazing with the team."
When asked directly if he expects Enrique to stay, Al-Khelaifi responded: "He's the best coach, I cannot answer the question, but I'm really confident, and it's all about the project. And he is the best one for the project." Former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is currently the early frontrunner for the Liverpool job, though Enrique had been listed as a favourite by bookmakers earlier in the week.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, reacting to Slot's exit, suggested the club will have already identified a successor. "I would be very surprised if they made that decision and all of a sudden thought, 'Well, who are we going to appoint next?'" he told TNT Sports. "Liverpool don't work like that. Liverpool are an organised machine, up top, they have been for a long time."
