Ferran Torres looks to have handed Marcus Rashford a chance of re-joining Barcelona permanently as the Spain international targets a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Personal terms have been agreed between the European champions and Torres with an official bid expected soon.
Torres's Achievements and Limited Role
The 26-year-old is fresh off a historic achievement after scoring a World Cup-winning goal for Spain. He also helped Barca lift the La Liga title with 16 goals in 33 appearances. Despite his return, Torres did not make regular starting XI's which may be a factor in his decision to look for a move elsewhere.
When Raphinha was fit, Rashford also played a secondary role at Barcelona but he and Torres linked up on several occasions. Robert Lewandowski was often preferred to the latter but he has since joined MLS side Chicago Fire.
Competition for Places
Despite that, the former Manchester City star is not guaranteed a place with the signings of Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon, which appeared to shut the door on Rashford's prospects of joining on a permanent basis, strengthening Barca's frontline.
While the new arrivals are not in direct competition with Torres, he may well be sensing that he is being sidelined. Head coach Hansi Flick also appeared open to the player departing when quizzed about his future following a 1-0 pre-season victory over Nottingham Forest.
He said: "I respect all the players, I don't know anything about the situation at the moment. I was focused on the team, and I don't know anything."
Rashford's Pre-Season Plans
Just hours before Barca's win over the Premier League side, Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw against Torres' potential future club PSG. Rashford played no part, still enjoying his post-World Cup break.
Michael Carrick did, however, confirm that he and two other players would be joining the club's pre-season camp in the coming days as preparations ramp up ahead of fixtures against Leeds United and AC Milan.
The United head coach said: "We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that, and Kobbie [Mainoo] and Lisandro [Martinez]. We look forward to seeing them."
Rashford's Future at Old Trafford
Rashford currently looks more likely to stay put at Old Trafford, though a departure for Torres could certainly shake things up. Barca appear to have their sights set primarily on Manchester City's Rodri for now, but may well find themselves turning their attention to more attacking targets before long.
Julian Alvarez is thought to be higher up their wishlist than Rashford, with Barca pursuing his signature intensely ahead of the World Cup. The Argentine is said to still be seeking a move away, but Diego Simeone's side have no plans to negotiate with Barca unless his eye-watering release clause is triggered - which could enhance Rashford's prospects.
