Tottenham Hotspur were left to rue missed opportunities as Paris Saint-Germain fought back from two goals down to win the Uefa Super Cup on penalties in Udine. Thomas Frank's side dominated for large periods and led 2-0 with five minutes of regulation time remaining, but a late collapse saw the Champions League holders level the tie and eventually prevail in the shootout.
Spurs took the lead in the first half through Micky van de Ven, who followed up after Lucas Chevalier had saved João Palhinha's effort. Cristian Romero doubled the advantage early in the second half with a header from a Pedro Porro free-kick, although Chevalier should have done better with the save. Kevin Danso could have added a third as Tottenham continued to dominate.
However, PSG substitute Lee Kang-in pulled one back with a 20-yard strike in the 85th minute, and Gonçalo Ramos headed home an Ousmane Dembélé cross in the fourth minute of added time to force penalties. In the shootout, Van de Ven saw his effort saved by Chevalier, and Mathys Tel fired wide, leaving Nuno Mendes to score the decisive spot-kick after Vitinha had missed for PSG.
Frank will be encouraged by his side's performance for much of the match, particularly their threat from set pieces and the energy of Mohammed Kudus. However, the manner of the defeat highlighted the deep-rooted issues that remain in a squad accustomed to late setbacks. 'There is no quick fix to some deep-rooted habits,' Frank acknowledged afterwards.
