Prescot Cables stand replacement could cost £2m, council leader says
Prescot Cables stand replacement could cost £2m

Replacing the aging main stand at Prescot Cables Football Club's ground could cost about £2m, Knowsley Council's leader has said, as the club considers its future at the 116-year-old home.

Cllr Graham Morgan said an assessment commissioned by the council found the stand above the clubhouse and changing rooms was "coming towards the end of its life" and would need replacing within two years. He said the authority "hasn't got that kind of money" to fund the work.

Club faces major investment decision

The Northern Premier League West club said in September that any long-term solution would likely require substantial investment, either through a major refurbishment of the existing structure or a complete rebuild. The fan-owned club's board said it was exploring all available options to ensure a sustainable future.

The club is in discussions with Knowsley Council over its future. Cllr Morgan said the council was working "very, very closely with the board" to see what could be done to improve facilities for spectators.

Council's role in securing the ground

The council bought the Auto Safety Centre Stadium on Hope Street from private ownership in 2018 for £300,000 and granted the club a 99-year lease. Cllr Morgan said he was "really passionate" about Cables and wanted to see the club stay at the ground "for generations to come."

He said the club's fortunes were tied to ongoing upgrades in Prescot itself, describing Cables fans as "the lifeblood of Prescot town centre regeneration."

No decision on the ground's future has been made. The club's next fixture is scheduled for November 7, when Prescot Cables play Shifnal Town.
