Plymouth Argyle advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory over Coventry City at Home Park on Tuesday night. Goals from Ryan Hardie and Morgan Whittaker proved decisive as the Championship side overcame their second-tier opponents.
Hardie Opens the Scoring
Ryan Hardie put Plymouth ahead in the 34th minute, finishing from close range after a well-worked move. The striker's clinical strike gave the home side a deserved lead after a dominant opening half-hour.
Coventry struggled to create clear chances in the first half, with Plymouth controlling possession and tempo. The visitors' best opportunity fell to Viktor Gyökeres, who saw his effort saved by Michael Cooper.
Whittaker Doubles the Lead
Morgan Whittaker doubled Plymouth's advantage in the 58th minute with a composed finish from the edge of the area. The winger cut inside onto his left foot and curled the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson with no chance.
The goal gave Plymouth breathing room and forced Coventry to push forward in search of a route back into the tie.
Coventry's Late Response Falls Short
Coventry pulled one back in the 78th minute through Callum O'Hare, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up to slot home from six yards. The late goal set up a tense finale, but Plymouth held firm to secure their place in the next round.
The victory continues Plymouth's strong start to the season under manager Wayne Rooney, who has now led his side to three wins in their last four matches across all competitions.
