Departing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed a desire to take charge of a national team, having previously stated his ambition to lead a country at a major tournament. The 55-year-old confirmed on Friday that he will step down after a decade at the Etihad Stadium, ending intense speculation over his future.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil in February 2024, Guardiola said: 'A national team. I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I would like that. I don't know who would want me! To work for a national team they have to want you, just like a club.' He signed a two-year contract extension with City in November 2024, but is now available to pursue that ambition.
According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Guardiola has shown interest in taking charge of Italy, who have failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. He was also linked with the Brazil job while on sabbatical in 2012, though current boss Carlo Ancelotti is contracted until 2030. Spain and England are other potential options, but both currently have managers in place.
Guardiola leaves City as the most decorated manager in the club's history, with 20 major honours including six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League. He will remain with the club as Global Ambassador for City Football Group. In a statement, he said: 'Don't ask me the reasons I'm leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it's my time.'
