Paul Gascoigne has revealed he feared he would die after a fall during the festive period left him with six broken ribs and punctured lungs. The former England international, 58, was hospitalised after falling backwards while trying to hang something up.
Speaking to Clutch 9, Gascoigne described his panic when his neck began to swell. He recalled pleading with a surgeon: 'Please, please, tell me I’m not going to die.' The surgeon reportedly replied, 'I’m not going to tell you - you should have signed for Manchester United,' before leaving the room.
Gascoigne said he was 'crying his eyes out' and feared he could see his father in the clouds. The incident is not his first health scare; in June, he was found semi-conscious at his home in Poole, Dorset, and admitted to intensive care.
Despite his health struggles, Gascoigne remains passionate about football. He admitted he still misses playing and supports Newcastle United. He also expressed confidence in England's chances at the upcoming World Cup, saying: 'We have the players to win the World Cup.'
