Pardew Insists Arsenal Title Would Require Asterisk Over Tactical Approach
Former Premier League manager Alan Pardew has declared that Arsenal's potential Premier League triumph this season should come with an asterisk due to their functional style of play and perceived gamesmanship. His comments follow strong criticism from Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, whose side were defeated 1-0 by the Gunners on Wednesday evening.
Brighton Manager's Scathing Assessment of Arsenal's Methods
Following Arsenal's narrow victory at the Amex Stadium, which extended their lead at the top to seven points, Hurzeler launched a pointed attack on Mikel Arteta's team. The Brighton manager highlighted multiple instances where Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya went down injured, requiring medical treatment on the pitch. Hurzeler suggested Arsenal are effectively "making their own rules" with their approach to match management.
"I will never be the kind of manager who tries to win in that way," Hurzeler stated post-match. "If I ask everyone in the room, did he really enjoy this game? I'm sure maybe one raises his arm because he's a big Arsenal fan. Where will this go in the future? Is this what the supporters are paying for?"
Pardew's Analysis of Arsenal's Professional but Unattractive Football
Speaking on TalkSport, Pardew expressed agreement with Hurzeler's assessment while analysing Arsenal's performance from a managerial perspective. "When I'm looking at them with my football manager's head on, they're so professional," Pardew explained. "They do every bit of gamesmanship to get it over the line."
The former West Ham and Newcastle manager continued: "But really and truly, Brighton, although they have definitely upped the tempo and looked better second half, they've not really hurt Arsenal. And at the moment it looks like Arsenal are going to see it through. There'll be an asterisk next to their name because you've only got to look at them really in these type of performances and say it's just a functional display."
Pardew elaborated further on what he perceives as Arsenal's limitations: "It's a professional, functional display. They're good, they're strong, they're powerful. But there is nothing beautiful about them. That's the truth."
Statistical Evidence of Arsenal's Subdued Performance
The match statistics from Wednesday's encounter support observations about Arsenal's unusually restrained approach. Mikel Arteta's side managed only seven shots on goal throughout the entire match, with Bukayo Saka's ninth-minute winner representing their sole successful attempt. Additionally, Arsenal completed just 70.9% of their passes, significantly below their typical possession-based standards.
Despite these offensive limitations, Arsenal compensated with dogged defensive organization that prevented Brighton from establishing any attacking fluency. The tactical approach secured three crucial points in the title race but has sparked considerable debate about the nature of their football.
As the Premier League season enters its decisive phase, Arsenal's methods continue to polarise opinion, with traditionalists questioning whether functional efficiency should outweigh aesthetic considerations in championship-winning campaigns.
