Liverpool Miss Out on Adam Wharton as Crystal Palace Secures £22m Deal
Palace sign Wharton in £22m deal beating Liverpool

Crystal Palace have pulled off a major transfer coup by securing the signature of Blackburn Rovers' highly-rated midfielder Adam Wharton for a fee of £22 million, beating Liverpool to the promising teenager.

The 19-year-old, who has been turning heads with his performances in the Championship this season, was reportedly on Liverpool's radar as they looked to bolster their midfield options. However, Palace moved swiftly to complete the deal ahead of their Premier League rivals.

Palace's Ambitious Move

Wharton's arrival at Selhurst Park represents a significant statement of intent from Crystal Palace, who continue to build an exciting young squad under manager Roy Hodgson. The England U20 international has signed a long-term contract with the Eagles.

Blackburn will receive an initial £18 million, with potential add-ons taking the total package to £22 million - a club-record sale for Rovers. The Lancashire club have inserted a 15% sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

What Wharton Brings to Palace

The teenage midfielder has been described as one of the most exciting prospects outside the Premier League, with his composure on the ball, range of passing and tactical intelligence drawing comparisons to England international Declan Rice.

Wharton made his Championship debut in August 2022 and quickly established himself as a key player for Blackburn, making 31 appearances last season. His performances earned him a call-up to England's U20 squad in September.

Liverpool's Missed Opportunity

Liverpool had been monitoring Wharton's progress as they continue their midfield rebuild, but ultimately decided against making a formal bid. The Reds instead focused their attention on other targets, allowing Palace to swoop in unchallenged.

This represents another smart piece of business by Palace's sporting director Dougie Freedman, who has developed a reputation for identifying top young British talent at reasonable prices.

Wharton could make his Palace debut as early as this weekend when the Eagles face Sheffield United in the Premier League.
