Crystal Palace have decided not to dismiss manager Oliver Glasner, despite his public criticism of the board following the sale of captain Marc Guéhi to Manchester City. The Austrian manager accused the club's hierarchy of abandoning him and his squad after the defender was sold 24 hours before a crucial match against Sunderland, which Palace lost 2-1.
Glasner's outburst, in which he also admitted he does not care if he sees out his contract until the end of the season, dismayed Palace chair Steve Parish. After considering whether to part company with the manager who led the club to FA Cup glory eight months ago, Parish opted to keep Glasner in place. Sporting director Matt Hobbs held talks with the Austrian on Sunday morning, and it is understood Parish wants Glasner to see out his contract.
Glasner's frustrations stem from the club's inactivity in the transfer market since their FA Cup win, culminating in the sale of Guéhi to Manchester City for £20 million. The England defender missed the Sunderland match due to the impending transfer, completing his medical on Sunday. Glasner had previously referenced the record sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in August, saying: 'Your heart gets torn out twice in a season, one day before a game.'
The manager stated: 'We feel that we're being abandoned. There's no support. Everybody's disappointed. We've been playing with 12 to 13 players for weeks now.' Palace, however, believe the sale of Guéhi, who was out of contract in the summer, was in the club's best interest. Glasner had threatened to resign on the last day of the summer transfer window when Guéhi was close to joining Liverpool.
Juventus are expected to return with an offer for Jean-Philippe Mateta, although they want the France striker on loan with an obligation to buy. Mateta, who has less than 18 months left on his contract, is keen on the move. Palace are also in talks with Angers for 19-year-old forward Sidiki Cherif, and briefly considered including Jonathan David in a deal, but Juventus want to keep the Canada striker.
