Michael Owen has explained why he has “doubts” that Benjamin Sesko could be a long-term option for Manchester United. Sesko signed for the Red Devils last summer from RB Leipzig in a deal believed to be worth around £74million.
Sesko's debut season and injury
There have been reports in recent weeks providing speculation around Sesko’s future at United, with the striker scoring 12 goals during his first season at Old Trafford. Sesko was granted more minutes for United after Michael Carrick took charge at the start of the year, but did not feature in any of the final four matches of the campaign with a shin injury.
Bayern Munich links
Sesko's future has been a subject of discussion over the summer, with reports in recent days suggesting that Bayern Munich are considering making an approach for the United striker. Sesko is said to be viewed by Bayern as a possible long-term replacement for Harry Kane.
Owen's assessment
Former United striker Michael Owen has “doubts” that Sesko could be a long-term solution for United, and raised the possibility of the Red Devils entering the market for a new centre forward.
“Well, a lot of the time, half the time he [Sesko] doesn't even play and they do quite well anyway,” Owen said in an interview with Goal. “Whether they push [Matheus] Cunha up front or [Bryan] Mbeumo or whoever, they've managed without him.
“Even though he's the only out and out centre forward, if it was the European Cup final next week, then I'm not sure he would start. If they had another option, a better option, I'm sure they would take that.
“However, he has surprised a few. He wasn't that convincing right at the start, but it's not easy to be convincing in the Manchester United team over the last decade or so.
“Obviously, in the second half of the season, Manchester United are playing really, really well. He's grown into the role as well.
“You'd definitely say he's going to get more game time this season and see how he does. Do I see him as the long-term Manchester United centre forward? I'd have my doubts.”
