Ronnie O'Sullivan secured a 5-1 victory over Yao Pengcheng in the opening round of the Wuhan Open, but his performance left TNT Sports commentators Phillip Studd and Neal Foulds scrambling for words after a series of shocking misses.
The seven-time world champion faced home favourite Yao Pengcheng and managed a comprehensive win despite an uncharacteristic display. In the second frame, O'Sullivan inexplicably failed to pot several simple reds, prompting disbelief from the commentary team.
Commentators React to Shocking Misses
Studd was left gobsmacked after the first miss, which saw O'Sullivan fail to find the corner pocket under little pressure. "What a miss, goodness me," said the commentator. "What a miss. These pockets are not small, we know that. We know they're playing fairly generously, but that was a terrible miss, seemingly with no difficulty about the shot."
Fortunately for O'Sullivan, his opponent missed the next shot, allowing him to return to the table. However, he botched another straightforward attempt on the red, prompting Foulds to react: "Oh my goodness me. What are we watching? Knowing O'Sullivan as we do, if he wins this match, but continues in this way, he will be... disappointed doesn't cover it, he will be crestfallen."
Foulds added: "Because he doesn't see a win as a win, does he? He's not that sort of player. He likes to be playing well. I've known him lose matches, and say 'I'm happy with my game. I'm enjoying myself'. And then win, and be thoroughly miserable about it. Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm seeing. The standard has completely fallen off a cliff."
O'Sullivan Recovers to Reach Semi-Finals
O'Sullivan went on to miss a third consecutive red, prompting Studd to say: "Hard to fathom really. Both players are struggling terribly in this passage of play."
Fortunately, it was only a brief period of disappointment for O'Sullivan, who roared back to win the match before beating Stephen Maguire in round two. He produced a far better display to overcome the challenge posed by Mark Selby and reach the semi-finals on Thursday, but he still wasn't happy.
O'Sullivan Admits to 'Zero Confidence'
Speaking afterwards, O'Sullivan admitted: "I'm playing with zero confidence but I'm working hard on my game. I'm on the practice table a lot. I'm trying to figure out how to get out of this. I call it a disease because it feels like the method that I took on has ruined me really. I've got no cue power, got no sense of direction. I don't know where the balls are going."
He continued: "As a player, you have always have some anchors to hang onto. I used to have, like, four or five where if one wasn't working, I try another one, and then that would just get me going. But at the moment, I just have nothing. I haven't for four years, so it's just been like a nightmare."
