Alexander Isak has dismissed concerns over his difficult first season at Liverpool, insisting he is focused solely on Sweden's World Cup campaign. The former Newcastle United striker has made a positive start to the tournament, scoring once and registering three assists in Sweden's opening two matches.
Isak's form for his country is a stark contrast to his debut campaign at Anfield, where he managed just four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions following his £125m move from Newcastle in September 2025. His first season on Merseyside was hampered by fitness and injury issues, which he acknowledged contributed to his poor form.
Speaking ahead of Sweden's final Group F game against Japan in Dallas, the 26-year-old said he is in a good place physically and mentally. "Club team and national team are two very separate things," Isak said. "When I joined the national team, I had absolutely no thoughts about anything other than Sweden and the World Cup. Now I feel good, very good. But it's hard to put your finger on what your maximum is, you never know. But I have nothing to complain about right now when it comes to my physical status."
Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, sit third in Group F, one point behind Japan and the Netherlands after a 5-1 win over Tunisia and a 5-1 defeat to the Dutch. Isak has forged a promising partnership with Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, and the former Newcastle man is relishing a deeper playmaking role for his country.
"It's felt good," Isak added. "It's worked well in the matches. It's clear that you're a bit more of a playmaker, playing others forward instead of being the one making the deep runs yourself. But I'm enjoying it there. We are two talented players who want the best for the team."
