Newcastle secured a 2-0 win against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scoring second-half goals to give Matthias Jaissle his first victory as Newcastle boss.
Spurs, aiming to recover from their opening day defeat, struggled once again against their North East opponents. They fell behind just after the hour mark as Elanga scored with a lethal finish. Wissa then doubled Newcastle's lead with an acrobatic effort from a corner, leaving Spurs staring at back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign and without a single goal.
Elanga again
After scoring in Newcastle's opening game of the season against Liverpool, Anthony Elanga was at it again in North London. The winger had twice threatened before he actually scored, having gone close early on, while he was also unfortunate not to have scored after going past Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
Just after the hour mark, he did get his goal. Nico Gonzalez's brilliant crossfield ball was nodded down by Admir Dedic. Elanga picked up the ball, span and then placed it with pinpoint precision into the bottom corner via the post. Having only scored three times last season, Elanga looks a good bet to beat that record this season.
Wicked Wissa
While Elanga faced severe criticism for his displays last season, the same could certainly be said of Yoane Wissa. The forward struggled in his debut campaign at St James' Park following a move from Brentford. But he looks a player reborn this term. He was brilliant against Liverpool and now has his first goal of the season after hooking home acrobatically after Spurs failed to clear a corner.
It might be early days but if Newcastle can get both Wissa and Elanga firing throughout the season, they could be in for a very promising year indeed.
Porro a problem
Not necessarily for Spurs, but Pedro Porro is a problem for opposition teams. The Spanish defender had a brilliant World Cup and looks set to be a major star for the North London side again. He had two brilliant opportunities to open the scoring in the first half, having had an effort blocked by Lewis Hall, while he also lifted a couple of efforts over the crossbar. Despite two defeats, Porro has been a bright spot for Tottenham.
Tonali's tough reception
It wasn't quite a baying St James' Park but Tottenham midfielder Sandro Tonali still received a less-than-welcoming response by supporters of his former club Newcastle. The £92.5m midfielder saw his every touch booed by those assembled in the away corner of the ground. He was taken off in the 75th minute to loud cheers from Newcastle fans. While his reception will have left a bitter taste, the result might even more so.
Spurs' poor home record continues
Roberto De Zerbi had yet to lose on home soil since being appointed as Tottenham boss. But he's not quite managed to escape their dreadful record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The North London side were woeful on their own patch last season, winning just three Premier League games in all. If this display is anything to go by, it could potentially be another season of pain for the home supporters - and that's simply not good enough given all of the money they have spent this summer.
