Gary Neville criticised Manchester United's performance as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Everton at Old Trafford, ending their unbeaten run. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal of the match, handing United their fourth Premier League loss of the season.
The match was notable for a first-half incident in which Idrissa Gueye appeared to slap his own teammate, Michael Keane, leaving Everton with 10 men for the majority of the game. Despite the numerical advantage, United failed to capitalise and suffered their first league defeat since September 27 against Brentford.
Neville, providing commentary for Sky Sports, expressed his dissatisfaction with United's tactical approach after Everton's red card. He highlighted the imbalance as United defenders outnumbered Everton players during a goal-kick, saying: "You've got five defenders at the back. Why? And they didn't even win the header. Or the second ball. Embarrassing."
The former United captain also singled out Luke Shaw's second-half performance, accusing him of ambling forward instead of running with urgency. "He's been bugging me for the last 20 minutes and I am just going to say it. Look at him. You can't do that. You should be running forward every single time," Neville added.
On the red card, Neville suggested there was "not much in it," while former Everton boss Roberto Martinez maintained the referee had little choice, stating that any aggression above the neck is a red card under the laws of the game. United now face Crystal Palace at the weekend as they look to bounce back.
