Gary Neville's Scathing Critique of Chelsea Goalkeeper After Arsenal Loss
Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville delivered a brutal assessment of Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez following his disastrous role in Arsenal's winning goal during a Premier League clash. The Gunners secured a 2-1 victory, with Jurrien Timber scoring the decisive goal from a set-piece, prompting Neville to lay blame squarely on Sanchez for his positioning error.
Set-Piece Woes Haunt Chelsea in Defeat
Arsenal opened the scoring in the first half when William Saliba nodded in from close range off a corner. Chelsea managed to equalise through an own goal by Piero Hincapie from Reece James' delivery. However, in the second half, Arsenal regained the lead with yet another goal from a dead-ball situation. Declan Rice's corner found Timber at the back post, who headed home despite protests from Chelsea players over a potential foul.
Replays revealed that Sanchez had misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Timber to capitalise. Neville, during Sky Sports' coverage, initially questioned if a foul had occurred but later condemned the goalkeeper's decision-making. "Chelsea are asking for VAR but Sanchez is all over the place in my view," he said. "There's not a chance of a foul. It's really poor goalkeeping."
Sanchez's Struggles and Further Chelsea Setbacks
Neville added that Sanchez had a poor overall performance, noting issues with ball handling and positioning. "Sanchez has had a really poor day. He got the flight of the ball wrong," he remarked. The Spaniard's errors were compounded when he almost gifted Arsenal an early goal after failing to deal with a routine clearance.
Matters worsened for Chelsea shortly after falling behind, as winger Pedro Neto received a red card. Neto was first booked for dissent following Timber's goal and then sent off for a reckless tackle on Gabriel Martinelli during a counter-attack. Despite having more possession and creating chances, Chelsea squandered opportunities to climb into fifth place in the table.
Manager's Frustration Over Recurring Issues
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior expressed frustration after the game, highlighting defensive frailties and disciplinary problems. "It's been the same story for the last three games," he said on Sky Sports. "We're in the ascendency in all three games [against Arsenal, Leeds, and Burnley], but we just... need to make sure we are ruthless in both boxes."
Rosenior emphasised that the team's issues lie in conceding goals from set-pieces and receiving red cards, rather than in their attacking play. "To concede two goals from corners and to get another red card, that has been the story of our season and the story of our last few games," he concluded, pointing to areas needing urgent improvement.
